This is our first impression of the Great Hall, in the Lanyon Building, the main building of Queen's University Belfast. It was love at first sight.
They were preparing for a wedding dinner (memory cloudy at the moment) that time, and it was very well decorated. Beautiful. This is one of the halls Queen's usually puts out for rent when there are no functions here.
According to legends, the Great Hall was once a classroom. The first classroom, to be exact, in Queen's. And guess what was their first offered course. Give yourselves some applause if you guessed Medicine!
And so, a 'big shot' visitor from Malaysia, came to visit, and invited all the Malaysian students for a reception and dinner in the Great Hall. It was clearly written RECEPTION AND DINNER in the invitation. Anyway, there we are, about 50 students dressed formally for that 'big shot's' dinner.
This is what was first served! We all thought, if the appetiser was this great as this, the main course is going to be a BOMB! As usual, I always take my plate full of everything available. There were fried cheese, the tempura that I missed so much, curry-puffs, meat balls, minute bread pizzas and raw salmon on cream tarts! Heaven!
As we were waiting for the main course, Mr. 'big shot' decided to get himself bombarded, AK-47ed and hand grenaded by asking us to voice out questions and issues. Of course, I knew how his answers would be. 'Big shot' is a politician! I actually paid no attention, but constantly looked over to see what the main course was. The cleaners were taking away the appetisers...
And then I heard, "Alright, thank you for coming. Have a good night!"
I can see the emotions written on everyone's face, which were once filled with expectations of a 6 course meal, including me. Shocked, stunned and dismayed. I pity the girls who took so little of the food, saving stomach space whatever savoury fantasy that might appear. Nothing appeared.
